僕の仕事と言えば 先生の身の回りの 世話と膨大な量の 蔵書の整理・・・

昔はただ言われるが ままに仕事として やってきたこの蔵書 の整理･･･

年頃となった僕は 門前の小僧が習わぬ 経を読むように･･･

As I reached that age, I was like the novice monk at the temple gate who could recite scriptures without being taught...

興味のある本を 次々と読み漁るようになっていた

I had started devouring books that interested me one after another.

本から得られる知識は 絶え間なく僕の好奇心 を刺激した

The knowledge gained from books constantly stimulated my curiosity.

先生は特に何を言う わけでもなく自由に 本を読む事が出来た 仕事をちゃんと こなしさえすれば・・・

The teacher didn't say anything in particular, and I could read books freely as long as I did my job properly...
