In a world plagued by terrifying beings called phantoms that suck the life out of humans, the only hope lies with magical girls who can take them down. However, there's a twist in this battle between light and darkness: a shadow phantom named Shade has been looking out for 16-year-old Tanpopo Ohanami since she was a kid, protecting her from other phantoms and her own blunders. One day, while at school, Tanpopo gets approached by a special organization called Butterfly, which is dedicated to managing magical girls. They see a lot of potential in her to become a powerful magical girl. But Shade, her loyal phantom friend, warns her that if she takes that path, they will end up on opposite sides. All Tanpopo ever wanted was to fight alongside Shade, but when she accidentally unlocks her own magical powers, she discovers that the reality of phantoms and magical girls is much more complicated than she ever imagined.
