Vagabond

Set in 16th-century Japan, the story follows a rough-and-tumble young man named Shinmen Takezou, known for his wild looks and even wilder behavior. His fierce attitude has made him both feared and scorned in his village, prompting him and his close buddy, Matahachi Honiden, to escape in search of a more exciting life. They join the Toyotomi army, dreaming of glory, but their hopes are dashed when they face a devastating defeat against the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, barely escaping with their lives. After the chaos, the two friends get separated, and Shinmen heads back home with the intention of letting Matahachi's family know he’s alive. However, he finds himself in a heap of trouble, wrongfully accused of murdering his friend due to his violent past. Captured and left to die, he’s saved by a wandering monk named Takuan Soho, who takes pity on him. Takuan gives him a new identity—Musashi Miyamoto—to help him evade the law. "Vagabond" is a fictionalized account of Musashi's journey from a reckless swordsman aiming to be "Invincible Under the Heavens" to a wise warrior who discovers the value of friendship, introspection, and the essence of life itself.
